WHAT'S THE SEASON?

TODAY WAS SUPPOSED to bring 3 inches of snow –  our first real taste of winter.  Instead, the storm veered off, and we had a sunny day in the mid-30s. Last year at this time, we were buried in six feet of snow; today I noticed snowdrops blooming as I pulled out of the driveway.

The early iris (Reticulata) that normally warm themselves in the March sunshine are poking up; I fear they’ll get a cool reception before they bloom. And the hellebores, which have never made a move til late April, are swelling their purple  buds.

It’s feeling more like southern Pennsylvania or Delaware than northern Massachusetts.

Wonder if we'll get to use that shiny new snowblower that seemed so necessary last summer. Or did the purchase jinx our winter?
